Order Acceptance and Scheduling at a Make-to-Order System Using Revenue Management. (August 2006) Anshu Jalora, B.Tech., Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India; M.E., Texas A&M University Chair of Advisory Committee: Brett A. Peters Make-to-order (MTO) systems have been traditionally popular in manufacturing industries that either seek to provide greater variety to their customers or make products that are unique to their customers. More recently, with shrinking product life cycles, there is an increasing interest in operating as MTO systems. With the tremendous success of revenue management techniques in the service industries over the last three decades, there is a growing interest in applying these techniques in MTO manufacturing industries. In the present work, we consider three problems that apply revenue management (RM) to on-date delivery MTO systems. In the first problem, we assume that all orders completed in advance of their due-dates are stored at third party warehouses and apply RM in computing efficient order acceptance and scheduling policies. We develop an optimal solution scheme, and based on the insights gained on the structural properties of the optimal solution, we develop a stochastic approximation scheme for finding efficient solutions. Through computational studies on simulated problems, we illustrate the potential of RM in improving net profits over popular practices. In our second problem, we extend the RM model to consider presence of a certain amount of first party warehousing capacity for storing the orders completed in advance of their due-dates. We study the conditions under which it is desirable to consider the holding cost aspects in the RM model. In our third problem, we develop a scheme

A cloud-based simulated annealing algorithm for order acceptance problem with weighted tardiness penalties in permutation flow shop scheduling

Make-to-order is a production strategy in which manufacturing starts only after a customer's order is received; in other words, it is a pull-type supply chain operation since manufacturing is carried out as soon as the demand is confirmed. This paper studies the order acceptance problem with weighted tardiness penalties in permutation flow shop scheduling with MTO production strategy, the objec...

Service Level Based Capacity Rationing Procedure for Make-To-Order Manufacturing Systems

We extend a heuristic method within the framework of “dynamic capacity apportionment procedure” (DCAP) to allocate an existing capacity among the classes with different profit contributions. In general, DCAP is applied when some capacity shortage exists and can not be enhanced in short - run. Our proposed approach is constructed for a make - to - order manufacturing system that produces a varie...

Integrated model for pricing, delivery time setting, and scheduling in make-to-order environments

Usually, in make-to-order environments which work only in response to the customer’s orders, manufacturers for maximizing the profits should offer the best price and delivery time for an order considering the existing capacity and the customer’s sensitivity to both the factors. In this paper, an integrated approach for pricing, delivery time setting and scheduling of new arrival orders are prop...

Coordinating Order Acceptance and Batch Delivery for an Integrated Supply Chain Scheduling

This paper develops Order Acceptance for an Integrated Production-Distribution Problem in which Batch Delivery is implemented. The aim of this problem is to coordinate: (1) rejecting some of the orders (2) production scheduling of the accepted orders and (3) batch delivery to maximize Total Net Profit. A Mixed Integer Programming is proposed for the problem. In addition, a hybrid meta-heuristic...
